A guide for Singaporean couples on how to choose their bridesmaids and groomsmen (兄弟姐妹), their key responsibilities, and how to manage the bridal party.

Your bridal party – your bridesmaids (姐妹, *jiěmèi*) and groomsmen (兄弟, *xiōngdì*) – are the friends and family who will stand by your side on one of the biggest days of your life. In Singapore, they play a huge role, especially during the morning’s gatecrash! Choosing the right people is about more than just friendship; it’s about choosing a reliable support system. Here’s how to pick your team.

1. Who Should You Ask?

It’s tempting to ask everyone you love, but a bridal party needs to be manageable. Think about who has been a consistent, supportive presence in your life.

  • Reliability is Key: Choose people you can count on. Are they organised? Are they punctual? You’ll need them to be on time (often very early!) and ready to help.
  • Positive and Calm: Wedding planning can be stressful. Your bridal party should consist of people who can stay calm under pressure and keep the mood light and happy.
  • Siblings and Close Family: It’s a lovely tradition to include your siblings and close cousins. This is often the first place couples look.
  • Long-Term Friends: Choose the friends who have been with you through thick and thin, not just your newest “fun” friend.

2. The Role of the Xiongdis and Jiemeis in Singapore

The responsibilities of a Singaporean bridal party are unique! While they help with planning and emotional support, their biggest role is often on the wedding day itself.

  • The Gatecrash: This is the main event! The jiěmèi (bridesmaids) are in charge of creating fun, challenging games to test the groom and his xiōngdì (groomsmen). The xiōngdì must protect their groom and help him pass all the tests!
  • Managing Logistics: They help manage the flow of the day, hold onto the ang bao (red packets) during the tea ceremony, and look after the rings.
  • Guest Assistance: At the banquet, they may help usher guests, manage the reception table, or distribute wedding favours.
  • Emotional Support: Most importantly, they are there to keep you, the couple, calm, hydrated, and happy all day long.

3. Managing Your Bridal Party (and Their Costs)

Being in a bridal party is an honour, but it also involves time and money. Be clear and considerate from the start.

  • Be Upfront About Costs: In Singapore, it’s common for the couple to pay for or subsidise the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s outfits (or at least their matching ties/boutonnieres). Be clear about who is paying for what.
  • Don’t Overwhelm Them: While they are there to help, don’t use your bridal party as free wedding planners. Give them specific, manageable tasks.
  • Say Thank You: A thoughtful gift and a heartfelt thank-you speech at the banquet are essential. You should also give them a thank-you ang bao for their help on the day.

How many do you need? There’s no fixed rule! Most Singaporean couples have between 3 to 6 bridesmaids and groomsmen. The key is to have matching numbers on both sides for balance in photos and during the march-in.

Choosing your bridal party is about surrounding yourself with the people who love you most. Select friends and family who will not only celebrate with you but actively help you celebrate. They are your ultimate support squad for the big day!
